Josep spoke about advanced NMR techniques that can be used for the structure elucidation of complex small molecules on December 14, 2016.



Routine small and medium-size molecules can generally be characterized by conventional NMR techniques such as 1D NMR and 2D NMR experiments including COSY, NOESY/ROESY, HSQC and HMBC. However, when facing unknown natural products and/or complex small molecules, i.e. highly proton-deficient compounds, an assignment strategy augmented by NMR techniques to specifically establish carbon-carbon connectivities and/or very long-range proton-carbon correlations may be necessary to unambiguously address structural questions.


About Dr. Josep Saurí

jsauri-linkedinJosep got his Ph.D at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Catalonia, under the supervision of Dr. Teodor Parella in May 2014. His PhD research was based on the development of modern NMR pulse sequences for structural elucidation purposes, focusing on the measurement of proton-carbon coupling constants (among others coupling constants) in small molecules. Josep joined Merck & Co., Inc. in Rahway, NJ, in August 2014 as a postdoc under the mentorship of Dr. Gary E. Martin. His Postdoc research was focused on structural elucidation of small molecules, pharmaceuticals and natural products by using modern NMR techniques. In August 2016 he moved to Boston, MA, to join Merck Research Laboratories as a Sr. Scientist.
